I like to make a new 3D version of my squirrel mascot for this blog every year if I can so that I can practice my skills and try new things.
I decided to make a 3D version based on the 2D designs I made for the blog. I changed the ponytail hairstyle because I didn’t think it worked that well but I kept everything else including the jumper and a beanbag for it to sit on. The original story behind the ponytail was that I wanted it to look like a girl, but it didn’t really work that well since the ponytail sort of clashed with the tail. (Maybe I’ll try again some day with a different approach). I think it could still be a girl with this hairstyle but I also think it could be a boy too. I might have to think of another way to emphasise the feminine qualities.
I started by blocking out the shapes for the mascot in Curvy 3D, then I used ZBrush 2022 to sculpt the model.
After that I exported the low resolution meshes and the high resolution meshes for baking and UV mapping. I UV mapped the objects using 3D Coat and baked normals using Substance Painter.
The texturing work was done using 3D Coat. I tried a slightly different technique for this one.
After that I rigged the model in Blender with Auto Rig Pro and made a beanbag for it to sit on.
Thanks for reading.
You can buy an .stl model of the mascot on my Gumroad shop if you would like to 3D print it for your desk.
